COMMISSIONED MINISTRY

In the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), a Commissioned Minister is a type of clergy who performs ministry on behalf of the denomination but may not have a Master of Divinity degree. Commissioned ministers are authorized to serve in specific church-related ministries, such as education, music, or nursing, and are not required to perform sacramental duties as an ordained minister. They are typically called to a position with a church or church-related agency.

Criteria:

  • The applicant must be a participating member of a congregation of the Christian Church (Disciples of Church) Capital Area

  • The applicant must present a letter of endorsement of their ministry by the official body of that congregation.

  • Commissioned Ministers are required to send a written letter affirming their services as a commissioned minister and intention to renew their ministry.

  • Commissioned ministers are required to request a meeting with the commission on ministry at least 60 days before the expiration of their commission and secure a written endorsement from their sponsoring institution.

Commissioned Ministers are a part of the CCCA Minister’s Association and are encouraged to participate in clergy gatherings, educational opportunities, and retreats.  Through the CCCA Ministers Association, Commissioned Ministers can be paired with an ordained minister as a mentor. For questions,  contact the Regional Minister, Rev. Dr. Marcus Leathers by email, who will then forward relevant communication to the Director of the Commission for Ministry as appropriate.
